In general, people tend to visit in the summer months, from May to October. A large land area, it contends with a colder continental climate from the east and a maritime one from the west. Due to this, weather is difficult to predict, and unlike Spain or elsewhere, it isn't possible to say with certainty if winter will see a blanket of snow over the country to paralyse traffic, or if the summer will be sunny and warm. On average, spring and autumn are good times to go; the crowds of the hottest summer months have either faded or not yet started, and it is pleasant and generally warm.

The major cities, such as capital Warsaw, are vibrant and modern with a youthful, well-educated population. Those who live here work hard and play hard, with a lively nightlife and clubs that party until dawn. Cafes are popular too, and the cuisine is great - eating out is definitely recommended! But despite the quick pace of life, the old parts of the cities, in some cases reconstructed after World War II destruction, are still charming places to visit, and flower-sellers come to the marketplaces in the mornings, as they have done for hundreds of years.

If you are travelling by motorhome, you are uniquely positioned to take advantage of Poland's many charms. From the big cities to the rural countryside, where scenes long since gone in other parts of the world are still to be found - such as horses pulling carts along the quiet roads. Unspoilt and lovely, rural Poland is stepping into another world.

For a truly spectacular sight, make the drive to the Carpathian Mountains, referred to in Stoker's famous novel. These are part of the Alpine range, and are the highest range in Central Europe. This vast region is not densely settled, mainly Alpine-type villages, and the odd city here and there, but it is known as having some of the best winter attractions in Poland. In summer, walking and hiking is popular, but the area is so large that you will not be tripping over others out enjoying the forests. Scattered with national parks and the occasional town that seems almost unchanged from medieval times, this is a wonderful corner of the world that you will never forget.

If you do visit in winter, snow is a major focus of sport, especially in the mountainous regions. Snowboarding, skiing, tobogganing and skating are all popular - although driving in some places can be very difficult, unsurprisingly!

In summer, the beaches are well-known and Poles and foreign holiday-makers alike flock to the Baltic coast, near Gdansk, for instance. Poland is, perhaps surprisingly, one of the best places in Europe for windsurfing and other watersports. The beaches are clean and unspoilt, miles of golden sand stretching along the shallow coastline of the warm sea.

Inland, you can drive for hundreds of miles in almost fairy-tale countryside, with forests and castles reminders of Poland's medieval glory. Krzyżtopór castle near the village of Ujazd is a magnificent sight still, a vast ruined fortress that has taken a battering over the last few hundred years, but still remains standing.

For sheer range of things to do and see, for price, and for the friendliness of its people, Poland has to be one of the best, and most overlooked places in the world for a holiday. In your campervan, and not bound to a hotal, you will have access to far more of this vast and wonderful country than most other holiday-makers, and we recommend you make the most of the opportunity!
