Naples is a regional capital (Campania) of Italy, and one of the oldest and most densely populated cities in the world. Naples historic city centre is a WNESCO World Heritage Site, and it’s very survival to become so is a wonder in itself – it was the most bombed city in Italy in WWII. The ICOMOS evaluation of this site reads
“It is difficult to identify a city or cities with which Naples might be compared. Its cultural roots so completely different from those of any other Italian city that comparison would be worthless. It is equally difficult to equate Naples with other major Mediterranean cities such as Barcelona or Marseilles."
For art, architecture, history (the Archaeological Museum is a must-see!) and beauty, hidden gems such as the inner courtyard of the frescoed Santa Chiara monastery complex, and the famous churches featuring the work of great Renaissance artists Donatello and Caravaggio, Naples has an especial charm as a city of the heart of Europe.
