Porto is Portugal's second largest city with about 250,000 inhabitants. It is located in the North, on the Dvero river, where it meets the sea. It is the second of Portugal’s global cities, and the original name, Portus Cale, gives the word “Portugal” as well as “Port” wine.

 

Porto is a charming city, and a mix of medieval, narrow streets and open plazas. Culture is important, with museums, concert halls, theatres, galleries and cinemas. For readers, the Lello will be important, one of the greatest bookshops in the world! Festivals are important, especially the Queima das Fitas, the student-organised festival just before the exam study-period starts.

Of course, motorhome drivers won’t want to spend their entire holiday in Porto! And there’s certainly plenty to do and visit in the surrounds of Porto. Drive along the coast and stop in the bustling ports and resorts such as Espinho. Or perhaps the smaller traditional fishing villages and towns that still thrive along the coast. Maybe a wine-tasting tour in Vila Nova de Gaia, famous for its Port wine. Or why not abandon land altogether for a bit and enjoy a drifting river cruise on the Dvero river…
