Motorhome Hire in Madrid, Spain
The heart of the Iberian Penisula is Madrid, the capital of Spain. Surrounded by forests and bordered by mountains to the north, Madrid is set in an attractive landscape.
People have lived on the site of Madrid for thousands of years, and the city has grown around the early settlements into the vibrant, modern global city of today. Some of this can be seen in the buildings, the "Castilian Baroque" of the grey and red stone in this medieval royal city. Many styles merge in the streets of Madrid from different epochs of this city's history. Like other Spanish cities, green is important, and there are plenty of breathing spaces in the form of parks and tree-lined boulevards to amble down.
It is culture and the nightlife that draws people to cosmopolitan Madrid. "Madrileños" (a name by which the citizens refer to themselves) work hard and play hard, and the popular music and alternative scenes both attract their share of people. Different quarters of the city have their own styles from high fashion to hippie and pop to punk. With a bit of time on your hands, they are all worth exploring!
The museums of Madrid are well known, especially for art. El Prado is the largest art gallery in the world, with thousands of works. Italian, Flemish, German and Spanish art is all well-represented, as well as many more. One day will not be enough to see all there is in even this one museaum alone. Dutch art is particularly well shown in the Thyssen-Bornemisza, and Museo Lázaro Galdiano, Sorolla and the Reina Sofia are also worth seeing.
Outside the city itself, the Sierra de Guadarrama offer wonderful walking, hiking and climbing trips, as well as sightseeing for those who want to see the unspoiled countryside. The wildlife of the Madrid area is also surprisingly diverse and a walk in the woods may even allow you see an elusive lynx as well as the more common Spanish ibex. The Royal Palace of Aranjuez, once a royal summer home, is now open to the public, and its beautiful gardens should be seen.
Toledo, the famous "City of Swords", is along this route also, and with a motorhome, there are less restrictions on distances one can travel than there is with a traditional car and hotel holiday.
