King's Road Tour / Kuninkaantie - Approx 250 - 350 miles / 400 - 550 km total length depending on route chosen
The King's Road was the most significant travel route in the Nordic countries, and follows an old postal route. The road has been used by kings and their messengers, bishops and townsmen, artists and armies since the 14th century. The King's Road starts in Bergen by the Atlantic coast and runs through Oslo and Stockholm, the archipelago to Turku and through southern Finland to Vyborg and St Petersburg.
The King's Road route runs through Finland's southern coastal region. The section detailed here is between Lappeenranta and Turku. Along the route there are medieval churches, historic manor houses, picturesque old ironworks, charming villages, rolling hills, lakes, idyllic harbour towns, charming country villages and thick forests - all parts of classic Finland.

Lappeenranta
Lappeenranta is the administrative and cultural capital of South Karelia and the centre of tourism on Lake Saimaa. It is known as the "Town of Lindens" because of the 2,600 Linden Trees planted in the parks and lining the streets. The heart of the historical town is Fortress. It now houses museums, cafés and craft shops but the cavalry tradition is still visible in the cavalrymen that ride through the town regularly in embroidered shirts and red trousers.

- The Churches of Lappeenranta - The are two notable churches. The Orthodox Church within the Fortress built in 1785, and the wooden Lutheran church.
- South Carelian Art Museum
- South Carelian Museum - This museum is housed in part of the town fortress. The history of the town can be seen here and also local peasant costumes.
- Young Officer's House - Handicraft workshops and Café
- Cavalry Museum - Built in 1772, this is the oldest building in Lappeenranta. It was the Garrison Guardroom for the Finnish Dragoon Regiment. Exhibits include uniforms, weapons and documents.
- Wolkoff House Museum - A merchant Family home from 1870 with museum and guided tours
- Saimaa Canal - This canal connects Lake Saimaa to the Gulf of Finland. It is 43 km long with 8 locks. The best way to see the canal is to take a canal cruise and visit the Saimaa Canal Museum. The museum is located in a former cashier's residence on the eastern side of the Mälkiä lock at Sulkuvartijankatu 16.
- The Harbour - The harbour area near the fortress is one of the most lively in the summer months. There are cafés, terraces, outdoor concerts and floating restaurants. Cruises from the harbour explore the maze of islands on Lake Saimaa and the Saimaa Canal.
- Market Place - A great place to meet the locals and to shop. Local produce, crafts and traditional foods are available. It is open Monday to Friday from 7am to 7pm and Saturday mornings in the summertime. Flea market open on Sunday mornings.

Virolahti, incl. Vaalimaa & Virojoki
Virolahti is part of the Eastern Gulf of Finland National Park and is noted for it's excellent bird watching. There are bird observation towers around this area. Also some very rare species of moth and butterfly can be found here. Due to the clarity and wealth of the waters on this coast, sea fishing is a popular past time.
The tourism centre of Virolahti is in the Vaalimaa district. Here you can find the Tourist office, change currency and shop. The newest shopping centre here is called the Eastgate. Virojoki is the largest population centre of Virolahti. You can find many basic services there: banks, service stations, post office, pharmacy, health centre, specialised shops, schools, library and town hall.

Hamina
In Hamina, a traveller can meet vivid history and culture. The 350-year-old town with an unusual circular town plan has retained its ancient appearance. An 18th century Italian design star-shaped fortress surrounds the town centre. Wooden buildings, churches of various architectural styles and merchant family houses, line the town streets. Guided tours can be booked at the local tourist centre.
The sea is an integral part of Hamina and it is possible to explore the archipelago off the coast. These islands offer the visitor access to the beautiful Finnish wild life and watersports.
The sea, countryside and the unique archipelago with its old fishermen's villages are characteristic of Hamina. There are almost 400 islands, some of which belong to the Eastern Gulf of Finland National Park. The archipelago offers much to see and experience camping sites with services, and an abundant range of bird species and flora.

- Shopkeepers' Museum - A shop and merchant's residence from the turn of the century.
- Orthodox Church of St. Peter & St. Paul - This round church with Byzantine features was designed by Louis Visconti
- Church of Hamina - A Neo-classic Lutheran church designed by C. L. Engel in the style of a Greek temple.
- Hietakylä Cemetery - Established in 1773 beside the sea, the local dignitaries were buried here. The epitaphs contain the name of the deceased person and often a verse from the Bible or a line from a hymn referring to the deceased persons disposition and life-long ambitions. The earliest surviving memorials date from 1809.
- Kirkkojärvi Nature Trail -The 6 km trail circles Lake Kirkkojärvi which is a bird sanctuary and valuable natural environment for native animals, insects and plants. There are a number of information signs along the walk.
- Heinälampi Nature Trail - Located at Turkia in Hamina. The 1.8-kilometre trail has information signs about the natural attractions, campfire site and outdoor toilet.
- The Rampart Road -This is a 4.5 km route based in the fortress of Hamina and in its historic centre. The route is signposted and information boards present the history of Hamina and it's environment.

- Hamina Tattoo - The international military music event, the, which is held every two years in the Hamina Bastion. The venue for this event is the Hamina Bastion. The Hamina Bastion also hosts many types of summer events: theatre, concerts, fairs, exhibitions and sports.

Kotka
Kotka is the largest export in Finland. In this town the sea plays a major role. Many of its inhabitants work in shipping and related business. Kotka is very proud of it's port and it's green areas. There are excellent views of the city and the surroundings from the top of the former Haukkavuori water tower. The river Kymijoki, which runs through the city, has some challenging rapids just outside the city.

- The Sapokka Water Garden - Near to the centre of Kotka, the water garden is an oasis of sight and sound.
- Sibelius Park, Keskuskatu Linden Boulevard and Sculpture Park - The park is in the centre of Kotka, at the beginning of the Keskuskatu Linden Boulevard and has been recently restored according to the beautiful 1930's plan of Paul Olsson.
- Redoubt Kotka & Herb Garden - This beautiful herb garden is set in the Kotka Redoubt, a small fortification. The garden is adapted for the visually impaired and the plants have Braille name tags.
- Kotka Church - A neo-gothic church built in 1898 and designed by Josef Stenback.
- Kymi Church - Empire style church designed by C.L. Engel and built in 1850.
- Haapasaari Church - Wooden church, built in 1858 and used only in the summer.
- St. Nicolas Orthodox Church - The oldest building in Kotka, built in 1799.
- Kotka Maretarium - Seaside aquarium exhibiting water life from the seas and lakes. There are 22 themed aquariums and is a fascinating visit for all the family.
- Langinkoski Imperial Fishing Lodge of Czar Alexander III - This lodge, built in 1889, is set in the Langinkoski Nature Reserve. It has been preserved and tells of life in the Imperial family at the end of the 19th century.
- The Provincial Museum of Kymenlaakso - Local history museum with exhibits showing life in this area from the Stone Age to the present day.
- Museum Ships- The Icebreaker Tarmo is moored in the central harbour of Kotka. At 90 years of age the Tarmo is the world's oldest icebreaker. The Museum Boat Hall nearby holds the famous Finnish Patrolboat VMV 11 and the lifeboat Haapasaari.
- Stevedoring Museum - A collection of tools and other objects, which tell of life and work in Kotka harbour from 1920-1940
- The Aviation Museum - The Aviation museum at Kymi airfield differs from many other aviation museums in that most of it's aircraft are kept in flyable condition. The history of Fighter Squadron 34 that operated from Kymi during World War II. Aircraft include Gloster Gauntlet, Mig-21 BIS, Mig-21F, Fouga Magister, Draken, Harakka I, II & III, PIK-5c, Folland Gnat, FW-44 Stiglitz and more. Admission free

- The Archipelago off the coast of Kotka including Fort Slava ruins - A redbrick circular fortress, completed in 1794, on the island of Kukouri. Visits by waterbus from Sapokka. Varissaari -On the island a monument commemorating the great Naval Battle of Ruotsinsalmi and an exhibition of salvage from the frigate St. Nicholas. Visits by waterbus from Sapokanlahti quay.

- Santalahti Nature Trail - A 4 km walk along the seashore
- Karhuvuori Nature Trail - A 5 km walk with several different routes. It goes through marshy areas, along high cliffs and sea inlets. Suitable for bird watchers.

Loviisa / Lovisa
The seaside town of Loviisa was founded in 1745. It is best known for the wooden houses in the Old Town, the fortifications and it's wharves and marina. Both Finnish and Swedish are spoken in this area because at Loviisa's foundation, it was part of Sweden on the border with Russia. As a border area, many fortifications were built to protect the town.
Places to visit
- Svartholma Fortress - Located on an island 10km from Loviisa, this fortification is now a museum showing the 250 year history of the fortress and an exhibition area. Guided tours in Finnish, Swedish and English are available, and special pirate tours for children.
- The Old Town - The oldest part of Loviisa still contains wooden buildings that survived a town fire in 1855.
- Degerby Manor - Built in the 17th century, this is the oldest building in Loviisa and now is a restaurant.
- Market Square, Loviisa Church & Town Hall - This central area of Loviisa was mainly designed by Georg Chiewitz in the 1860's and is considered to be some of his best work.
- Loviisa Orthodox Church & Bell Tower - This church is housed in the former town barracks built in the 1700's.
- Loviisa Town Museum - The town museum is in the Old Commandant's House and exhibits include collections relating to the town history, sea-faring, local crafts, the history of the spa and Jean Sibelius; the composer.
- Bonga Castle - An unusual building in the centre of Loviisa, it now houses a museum of the artist Riitta Nelimarkka. More than 200 of her works are on view including drawings, aquarelles, graphic art, collages, woollen/flax reliefs, textile pictures, and art and poetry books.
- Laivasilta Marina Area - From the marina you can watch the bustle of the harbour. There are cafés, restaurants, exhibition areas and a maritime museum.
Rosen and Ungern Bastions - These bastions on either side of the Vyborg road were built in the mid 1700's but the planned network of 6 bastions and other fortifications were never completed. Ungern is used in the summer months for events and open-air theatre.

Porvoo / Borgå
Porvoo, or Borgå as it is known in Swedish, was founded in 1346 and in Finland's second oldest town. It is a charming town of wooden houses and cobbled streets set on the mouth of a river. It has inspired many artists in it's history including Johan Ludvig Runeberg (poet), Ville Vallgren (sculptor), Albert Edelfelt (painter) and Tove Jansson (creator of the Moomins).

Kirkkonummi / Kyrkslätt
Kirkkonummi has with more than 31.000 citizens. Kirkkonummi archipelago is a large area of both inner and outer archipelago situated off Porkkala peninsula in the central part of the Gulf of Finland. Large areas of open water dominate the archipelago. Most of the islands are small, barren and rocky, but a few are larger and forested. Some islands have small areas of low vegetated shore meadows and shallow lagoons. The main human activity is recreational boating but landing is forbidden on many islands.

- Sjundby Manor House -Manor house built in the 1500's
- Suitia Manor Castle -The manor castle was built in 1540-1545. After the destruction of the manor by Russians by 1730, and the new wooden main building was then destroyed by fire in 1758. The manor castle was restored by 1761 and reconstructed in 1898-1899 in a romantic medieval style. The garden dates from the 1540's and is the oldest known garden in Finland. Now, Helsinki University uses the manor for farming research.
- Siuntio Church
- Gårdskulla museum of agriculture - Gardskulla manor was founded in the 1820s. The interior of the main building has been remodelled in 1922. Nowadays, the manor is an agricultural museum, and is also used for events and conferences.

Lohja
Lohja is situated on the shores of Lake Lohja and this lake is the focus of recreation in the town; fishing, sailing, swimming, etc. The city dwellers of Helsinki discovered this idyllic spot and began building summer cottages here in the 1800's. Many of the lakeside homes are now owned locally but some are still holiday homes. Controlled development of the lake area has ensured that it retains it's peaceful and picturesque landscape. The area around Lohja is known for it's micro-climate which supports some very rare plants.

- Lake Lohja - The lake area is a beautiful place to stop and facilities are available for many watersports.
- Pähkinäniemi Park- This park area was first developed in the 1940's for the employees of a local factory. It has a beach, piers for boats, a restaurant and a dancing pavilion.
- Lake Lohja Nature Trails - There are 2 1.5km signposted trails along the lakeshore. There is also a trail on Liessaari Island.
- Karkali Nature Park and Trail - Located about 30 minutes from Lohja, this park is a protected landscape and a 6 km sign-posted trail will bring you through the area with information about the special habitat. Brochures are available in the parking area at the start/end of the walk.
- Torhola Cave - On the Karkalinniemi Cape, this is the largest natural cave in Finland
- The Church of Saint Lawrence -This is one of the most important Finnish medieval churches. The building was started in the 1300's and the church was finished in the 1500's. It was built to emulate the gothic cathedrals that were popular in Europe, but because of limited resources and unsuitable materials the result is charmingly primitive. The walls and the ceiling of the church are decorated by nearly 200 painted frescoes depicting bible stories.

- Fagervik Iron Works - Fagervik Ironworks were founded in 1646.. The manor building of this iron works was built in 1773 and has been excellently preserved. It is a most remarkable Rococo-style building.
- St Nicholas' Church - This church is thought to be one of the oldest buildings in the area. The oldest section is dated from the 1300's but many alterations, repairs and expansions have taken place since then.
- Degerby Igor Museum- From 1944 to 1956 this area of Finland was leased to the Russians as part of a peace deal. The museum details this part of local history, touchingly illustrated by the story of a young girl who lived through that time. Mona-Lisa of Degerby.
- Inkoo Summer Market - where a selection of produce and handicrafts from the Finnish archipelago are for sale
- Gammelgården - The local museum of the Inkoo district. A large number of the collections (including objects from the Stone Age) are located in the 18th century main building. Surrounding this are other out buildings, and sheds, which have been transported from different parts of the municipality. The museum yard is often used as a venue for summer festivals and events.

- The Old Water Tower - This tower is also used as an observation tower; contact the tourist office for access.

Hanko / Hangö
The Cape of Hanko and it's port have been always been a strategic location and hence Hanko has been the scene of many battles. At the turn of the century it took on a more restful aura when the railway arrived and Hanko became a spa town.
Places to see
- Bengtskär Lighthouse - The tallest lighthouse in Scandinavia is at the tip of the Hanko cape. There is a museum, café and other facilities at the lighthouse.
- The Spa Park - During the turn of the century Hanko was a spa town and beautiful wooden villas were built in this area. They were designed by well-known architects of that era. Many of the buildings were damaged in the Continuation war, but several still remain.
- The House of the Four Winds - On the island of Pieni Mäntysaari, this unusual café is worth a visit.
- Eastern Harbour (Itäsatama) - A bustling harbour with events and markets located here in the summer.
- Gustafsvärn (Kustaanvarustus) - Fortress ruins on a small island. It was built by the Swedes in the 1700's. There is also a lighthouse here built in 1951.
- Hauensuoli (Pike's Gut) - This narrow straight has been has been used as a shelter by seafarers for nearly 6 centuries. During their stop here many people have carved their names, coats of arms, messages and stories into the rocks of the islands. Over 640 have been found and catalogued.
- The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Hanko - Neo-gothic style church built in 1892
- The Church of Lappvik - Originally a prayer house from 1913, it was used as a cinema during the Russian occupation. The church was re-consecrated in the 1980's.
- The Orthodox Church of Hanko - Built in the late 19th century by Russian nobility. Do have a look at the icon mosaics in the towers.
- The Chapel of Täktom - Built as a memorial by Carl Glyphe for his young daughter in 1920. Design is influenced by the Baroque and Gothic styles.

- The Storm Look Out Tower - Located in the port of Hanko on the Kuningattarenvuori rocks.
- The Water Tower - 50 meters tall, this tower gives great views of the cape and the sea. There is a lift to the top and a telescope for viewing.
- Puistovuoret Nature Trail - Known locally as the Path of Love, this walk offers wonderful views of the sea and the coastline.

Pohja/Pojo
This village is definitely worth a visit, especially for any one with an interest in the history of ironworks in Finland. Don't miss the Fiskar Ironworks industrial community.
Places to visit
- Antskog Ironworks - The second oldest ironworks in Finland. Founded in 1630.
- Billnäs Ironworks - Founded in 1641 by Carl Billsten. The oldest buildings date back to the 18th century.
- Fiskars Ironworks - A charming, old industrial community. Founded by Peter Thorwöste in 1649. A must see village with old world charm. Many of the ironworks buildings still exist including the Stenhuset ( Kivimuuri) Manor house. The workshops and industries related to the iron works are also preserved, such as the cutlery mill, copper smithy, plough workshop and workers tenements. Most of these are now craft workshops, exhibition spaces and local businesses. Local craftsmen produce ironwork, porcelain, ceramics, stoneware, glass, jewellery, textiles and graphic art.

Perniö
Set in fertile river valleys and forests the Perniö area is a peaceful place to stop. The district has many manor houses which developed because of the King's road and the successful ironworks in the region. The metal industry is still an important part of the economy here. The nearby villages of Teijo and Meri-Teijo have retained their old world feel.

- Wiurila Manor and Carriage Museum - The Wiurila estate was designed by Engel and exhibits a wide selection of the local manors' horse-drawn vehicles, the oldest from the 18th century. The museum also has harnesses and different kinds of related equipment. There is a manor shop, a restaurant, a hostel, horse stables and a gallery nearby.

Salo
Salo, on the banks of the Uskelan River was the largest export port in Finland in the 17th century and even today you can arrive by boat beside the market place. It has become a very international town with only half of it's 25,000 residents speaking the local Salo dialect. This town was part of communications revolution as far back as the 1920's when a group of locals began manufacturing high quality wireless radio sets (Because of Salo's location; surrounded by rocky hills, the standard quality sets could not pick up a clear signal) Nokia now has it's phone development and engineering departments in Salo.

- Uskela Church - Uskela Church stands high on a Uskela hill. It was designed by C. L. Engel, and was built in 1832.
- Uskela Old Church and Graveyard - at Isokylä on Vanha Perttelintie, west of Us-kelanjoki. The old church, originally Catholic, was dedicated to St. Martin, and later became Lutheran. The church was destroyed by a rainstorm one Christmas Eve
- Salo Church - Originally a prayerhouse built in 1894 the building was turned into a church and consecrated 1927.
- Helisnummi Chapel - The Helisnummi Burial Chapel at Helisnummi, designed by Eero Eerikäinen, was built in 1964. The triangular shape of the chapel symbolises the Holy Trinity
- The Chapel of the Holy Cross - Located on Uskelankirkkotie Road at the foot of the Uskela Church Hill is a Greek Orthodox chapel built in 1990.

- Salo Art Museum Roundhouse - This new art museum is located in an old railway building and also houses an art reference library and café.
- Meritalo Museum - The building is one of the oldest in Salo centrum. It was originally the servant quarters of the Joensuu Manor and was later converted into a school, the first school in Salo, in 1873. Primarily a school museum, it has changing exhibitions of local character. In museum you can also see Uskela Dress, a new regional dress made public in 2003.
- The Viitankruunut Burial Mounds - Three graves from the Bronze Age at Viitanmäki Hill. A marked path leads to the right from Merikulmantie Road about 3,5 kilometres from the centre of the town.
- Isokylä Prehistoric Area - West of Uske-lanjoki and Hämeentie. Start at Vanumammantie. Iron age burial mounds and Culture Path
- The Lauri Statue - Lauri, the blacksmith stands in the centre of the town near the west bank of the Salo River. Lauri was the first citizen of Salo. The sculpture by Ben Renvall was unveiled in 1963.
- The Memorial Monument for Fjalar Nordell, founder of the Salora Radio and Television Factory. It stands in St. Anthony Park not far from the factory. The sculpture by Jarkko Roth was unveiled in 1996.
- The Flame of Freedom - A Memorial commemorating Finland's 75th year of independence is situated in Sibelius Park not far from the Blue House. The monument was designed and made by Seppo Manninen and erected in 1992.
- The Elk Sculpture stands in the Sibelius Park. The sculpture by Simo Helenius was erected in 1995.
- Old Anchor and Cannons - These naval-archaeological artefacts located in Horninpuisto Park were found and salvaged from the bottom of the Baltic Sea of Hiittis by the diving club Simppu in 1982. They presumably belonged to a Russian war ship in the late 1700´s or 1800´s.

- Paimio Sanatorium - A building designed by architect Alvar Aalto in an Early-Modern style and built 1929-1933
- Paimio Electricity Museum - A fascinating museum which is part of a working hydroelectric plant.
- St Jacob's Church & Rehbinder Mausoleum - The earliest known church on this site dates to medieval times. The present church was designed by Lars Sonck, and was built in 1928. It replaced an earlier church, which was built in 1806 and destroyed by fire in 1909. The belfry dates from 1734, and the neo-classical tomb was built in 1824.

Kaarina
Kaarina is a lovely, medium-sized town (pop. 20,000) just outside the town of Turku. With access to beaches, the archipelago, ferries to the Aland islands, forests and rivers, you will not be stuck for activities in this lovely place.

- Kuusisto Manor House
- Ruins of the Medieval Piispanlinna Bishop's Palace - The building of this bishop's castle began in the 14th c. under the Catholic bishop Ragvald II and was destroyed only a year after completion by the Russians. Though it was restored many times afterwards it was eventually demolished in 1528 by order of King Gustavus Wasa of Sweden. The ruins have been partially restored by the National Board of Antiquities.
- The Archipelago - Kaarina provides access to the Turku region of the archipelago, with over 20,000 islands and islets. This area is a nation park area.
- Aland Islands - Ferries connect Kaarina to Aland. This autonomous province of Finland comprises of over 6,500 islands with it's own culture and government. Tourism is very well catered for here.

Turku
Turku is the oldest city and the first capital of Finland. To day it is the capital of its region, the Southwest Finland. The name of Turku originates from a Slavic word "torg" - meaning a market place. The Swedish name for the town is Åbo - referring to the first settlers by the river, "å". Turku was founded on the river Aura and it is one of the best attractions of the town. All the main places of interest are located by the river. The riverbank is pulsing with life in summertime when people gather there to dine and wine, to listen to music and to have a good time. Look out for the sculptures and statues which dot the city.

Turku Cathedral, Museum and café - Built in the 13th century, this is the nation Finnish shrine and the mother church of the Lutheran Church of Finland. Many changes have been made to the cathedral over the centuries up to the modern day
- The Historical Museum of Turku - Located in the Bailey of Turku castle. Houses local history, scale models and a fine collection of coins and medals.
- Qwensel House and Pharmacy Museum - Built around the turn of the 17th century, the rococo and Gustavian styled rooms display some of the lifestyle of the upper classes during the period of Swedish rule in Finland. The Pharmacy Museum displays the history of pharmacies in Finland from the time when the drugs were all made on the premises. Also in the grounds are a bakery, a storehouse, a carriage shed, a barn and stables. In the interior courtyard are an herb shop and a café.
- The Biological museum - This museum is the only one in Finland in which the permanent exhibition is made up of dioramas only. Birds and mammals are displayed in their natural surroundings in Finland. The beautiful Art Nouveau building of the Biological Museum was built 1907.
- Luostarinmäki Handicrafts Museum - This area houses over 30 craft workshops and shows a way of life before the industrial revolution.
- Kylämäki Village of Living History - This is a working farm museum with artefacts, costumes and tools based on archaeological finds.
- Turku Art Museum - This museum is currently housed in the old observatory on Vartiovuorenmäki hill. This is a temporary measure until renovations are complete on the original museum building (April 2005) The city of Turku has a priceless collection of art and holds many temporary exhibitions.
Turku Castle - This castle dates from the 1280's. The modest fortification became over the years a huge grey stone castle. During it's life the castle has seen many important chapters in Finnish history. Interesting parts of the castle include King and Queen's halls, the prison of Erik XIV, and collections of medieval wooden sculptures, costumes, china, glassware, gold and silver artefacts, and toys.
- The Rettig Palace - Located on the river, this was the former residence of a tabacco factory owner. Rettig now houses 2 very different museums; Aboa Vetus and Ars Nova. Aboa Vetus - During some renovation work a medieval town block was discovered 7 meters below ground. Visitors can walk on the streets of this old Turku and see the uncovered houses. Exhibitions in this museum are constantly changing. Ars Nova - This is a museum of 20th century art with a collection of 500 works both Finnish and international. During the year both museums run workshops and host events. Special children's tours are arranged regularly.
