Hollywood Sign in Los AngelesLos Angeles has a long history, dating back to 1542. The original town of Los Angeles was founded on September 4, 1781, and was originally part of Mexico. Los Angeles was officially made part of the United States in 1848 with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.

 

With the arrival of motion pictures in the 1920's, a huge influx of creative talent descended on the city, creating the world famous Hollywood that has since become such a global influence.

 

Los Angeles is the second largest city in the United States, with a population of some 3.8 million people - in fact, the Los Angeles - Long Beach - Santa Anna area is home to over 13 million people, speaking more than a hundred languages. Los Angeles is truly a global city, with influences from all over the Earth.

 

Los Angeles is famous for it's weather, a sunny Mediterranean climate, moderated by it's position on the Pacific Coast. Plenty of sunshine and warm weather throughout the year, with temperatures during the summer averaging 82°F (27°C) in the downtown area. Most rainfall is found during winter and spring, and snow is almost unheard of.

 

Los Angeles is served by no less than 6 commercial airports, the largest and most well known of which is Los Angeles International. LAX, as it is known, is situated right in the city. Besides the commercial airports, there are more than a dozen private airports.

 

Los Angeles is well known the world over as a city dedicated to driving, with a huge network of freeways linking it all together - you really need a car to truly experience this city! However, there is an extensive bus system available, and there is also a Metro Rail Subway system which has been building up over the past few decades.

Try looking for your favourite film stars along the Hollywood Walk of Fame, where the stars have plaques mounted in the pavement. Another star spot is the hand and footprints left in the pavement at Grauman's Chinese Theater. Check out The Hollywood Museum, a must for all film fanatics, the museums collection covers all aspects of the movie business from the beginning, with thousands of displays to view.

 

Of course, with all the movie studios in Hollywood, don't miss out on the Studio Tours. The best is, of course, the famous Warner Bros Studio Tour, where you stand a good chance of spotting some of Hollywoods best and brightest making their magic. If they are not there, try a Starline Tour of the Movie Stars Homes - you just never know!

 

It's not all about the movies, though; don't forget to check out the Ripleys Believe it or Not museum on Hollywood Boulevard, and the Los Angeles Natural History Museum.

For the kids, there is the California Science Center, a hands-on adventure teaching children all about science and adventure, with an IMAX theater thrown in as an added bonus. Or, how about the Children's Museum of Los Angeles, another interactive environment. Bring them to the Los Angeles Zoo, where they can wander around loads of exhibits - the LA Zoo has over 1,200 animals to see!
